  • Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) is one of the leading institutions of national importance in technical education. Established with the objective of developing a ‘Centre of Excellence in Central India, it aims at becoming a multi-disciplinary centre for technical education by strengthening both teaching and research activities besides contributing to the needs of rural community, society and industry at large. This Institutional Digital Repository (IDR) has been developed jointly by the Central Computing Facility and Central Library for the institute. to the scholarly output of the institute. The core objective of the repository will be to collect, preserve and distribute of the scholarly contents and other institutional documents produced by MANIT Bhopal community members. All the contents may include, but is not limited to, copyright-compliant and will follow the strict gumlines of the policy formulated by the central library and will be subject to change in consent from the competent authority time to time.

A new academic session brings renewed energy, new aspirations, and fresh opportunities for learning. The Central Library warmly welcomes all new students and looks forward to supporting them throughout their academic journey. To help students become familiar with library services, resources, facilities, and digital platforms, library orientation sessions were organised in July/August 2026. As a part of our continuing journey towards digital transformation, the Digital Signage System in the library was inaugurated by Dr K K Shukla, Director, MANIT Bhopal. This initiative will enhance communication with users by providing timely information about library services, announcements, programmes, new resources, and important academic updates in an interactive format. We are also pleased to expand our collection with new information resources and trial databases, offering students and faculty opportunities to explore a wider range of scholarly content. In addition, a dedicated library programme on Perlego introduced users to its digital collection and encouraged greater engagement with ebooks and online reading resources. These initiatives reflect our commitment to creating a modern, user-focused, and academically enriching library environment. As the new session unfolds, we encourage all members of our academic community to make the fullest use of the library and its growing range of resources and services. Planning the Peri-Urban Expansion: A Case of Ring Road of Bhubaneswar, Capital Region, Odisha

Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha and one of India’s most significant planned cities, is facing a development paradox: while its core has been shaped by decades of master planning, its peri-urban periphery is expanding rapidly and chaotically, driven by market forces far outpacing the reach of statutory governance. The city’s spatial footprint has grown by approximately 89.7% between 2010 and 2025, absorbing surrounding villages and spilling into the rural hinterland of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) jurisdiction. This unmanaged edge growth, which now accounts for nearly 68.3% of all new construction in the BDA region, is creating a fragmented urban landscape characterized by acute infrastructure deficits, governance vacuums, and environmental vulnerabilities. The research concludes that the Capital Region Ring Road represents a pivotal juncture for Bhubaneswar — a moment when the choice between reactive development and proactive planning will determine the city’s sustainability and livability for decades to come. The Land Pooling Scheme, implemented within a reformed governance architecture, offers a fiscally viable, legally grounded, and socially equitable mechanism to transform uncontrolled peri-urban sprawl into planned, serviced, and productive urban extensions. This thesis provides a replicable model for peri-urban management applicable to rapidly growing Tier-2 cities across India.

PLANNING DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES FOR AMEENPUR LAKE, HYDERABAD

This study focuses on developing sustainable planning and design strategies for the restoration and management of Ameenpur Lake, located in Hyderabad. Urban expansion, unregulated land use change, and increasing anthropogenic pressure have significantly affected the ecological and hydrological functioning of the lake system. The study identifies key issues including degradation of natural drainage patterns, loss of ecological buffer zones, risk of wastewater inflow, and uncontrolled public access. The research adopts an integrated planning approach combining spatial analysis, hydrological assessment, and ecological evaluation. GIS-based analysis was used to examine land use patterns, slope, drainage networks, and critical zones influencing lake health. Based on the analysis, a set of comprehensive proposals has been developed focusing on decentralized wastewater treatment, ecological buffer restoration, sustainable drainage systems, shoreline stabilization, and controlled public access. The planning framework emphasizes a catchment-based approach, recognizing that lake sustainability depends on both internal management and external land use regulation. The study also proposes an implementation strategy supported by phased development, institutional coordination, and financial planning mechanisms. The outcomes of the study aim to enhance water quality, restore biodiversity, improve hydrological balance, and create a sustainable interface between urban development and natural ecosystems. The proposed model can serve as a replicable framework for urban lake restoration in rapidly growing metropolitan regions.

DECARBONIZING THE CORRIDOR: A SCALABLE FRAMEWORK FOR INTEGRATED TRANSIT AND EV REST AREAS

This thesis formulates a comprehensive site planning and spatial design framework for a Net-Zero Highway EV Charging Rest Area at Kohinoor, Malappuram, on National Highway 66 (NH-66), Kerala. The study is motivated by the concurrent operationalisation of the Vizhinjam International Transshipment Deepwater Port, the ongoing six-laning of NH-66 by NHAI, and the designation of NH-66 as India's first State-Led Electric Truck Corridor under the Central Government's PM E-DRIVE Scheme (2024). Primary data was collected through two field surveys: (1) a structured Traffic Volume Count (TVC) conducted between 09:00 and 17:00 hours using the IRC Classified Manual Count methodology, and (2) a structured EV User Preference Survey administered to 59 respondents along the NH-66 corridor. The TVC recorded an estimated 3,182 daily vehicles at the Kohinoor site, with EVs constituting 6.6% (211 vehicles per day) and heavy commercial vehicles forming 34.5% of the total flow. Peak hour volume was identified at 17:00 with 404 vehicles per hour. The survey revealed a 100% charger fault concern rate and a clear two-tier amenity hierarchy, with family dining and premium washrooms emerging as the top-ranked facilities. Based on these findings, the thesis proposes a three-zone segregated planning framework: Zone A . a 1.0-acre Heavy Logistics E-Truck Hub with pull-through CCS-II DC chargers; Zone B . a 0.6-acre Passenger EV Charging Zone with a 240 kW grid-tied Solar PV Canopy and BESS; and Zone C . a 0.4-acre Amenity Core incorporating a halal-certified restaurant, premium washrooms, prayer room (Musallah), waiting lounge, and convenience store. The energy strategy proposes a grid-interactive Net-Zero system anchored to the KSEB 33kV substation 600 metres from the site, achieving annual carbon neutrality through seasonal solar export-import balance. A supplementary Catenary Electric Road System (ERS) framework is proposed for the heavy freight component based on logistics operator consultation, addressing the dwell-time and payload penalties inherent to static plug-in charging for 40-ton trucks.
