Abstract

Rivers play a crucial role in shaping urban and regional landscapes; however, increasing urban expansion has led to significant ecological degradation and spatial conflicts along river corridors. This study focuses on the Narmada River corridor between Bhedaghat and Jabalpur, aiming to analyze the physical, environmental, and developmental dynamics influencing the river-edge settlements. The research adopts a spatial planning approach using GIS-based analysis, including slope, contour, natural drainage, road network, land use land cover (LULC), and vegetation assessment through NDVI. Temporal analysis of LULC (2015–2025) indicates a substantial increase in built-up areas, accompanied by a decline in vegetation cover, highlighting growing development pressure. The study further identifies environmentally sensitive zones, flood prone areas, and conflicts arising from encroachment within designated river buffer zones, guided by URDPFI guidelines, RRZ norms, and NGT regulations. Based on the analysis, the river corridor is classified into three distinct stretches—Bhedaghat (ecologically sensitive), middle stretch (transitional), and Jabalpur (urban influence zone). A zoning-based planning framework is proposed to regulate development and conserve the river ecosystem. The proposal emphasizes controlled development in urban areas, promotion of ecofriendly activities in transition zones, and strict conservation measures in sensitive regions. The study contributes to sustainable river corridor planning by integrating spatial analysis with policy frameworks, providing practical guidelines for balancing development and environmental conservation. The proposed strategies aim to enhance ecological resilience, reduce conflicts, and support long-term sustainable development along the Narmada River corridor
